User glyph codes have the form UG id M mid N sid, where id, mid, and sid are numbers. These codes correspond to the codes tksesh gave to new signs. Note that for compatibility with tksesh, we also support arbitrary “user glyph codes”.

This way, you will be sure to keep it even it a sign with this Gardiner code is later added to the software. We suggest that, if you create a sign with an “normal” gardiner code, you also give it an user sign code. In our example, your duck would replace the normal one, so it would have code “G39”. You will find more information on signs drawing in the next section.
So, have to come with you own versions of the signs, either from actual sources or by re-creating them. Please, note that using the codes is one thing, but that the actual signs drawing in the fonts of other softwares are legally protected. A number of lists are also available on the web. You will find these codes in Hannig's WB, for instance. So I gave it the code US1E162VARA, because E162 is a griffin sign. On the other hand, the Israel Stela contains a sign which is most probably a griffin, but does not correspond to any registered griffin sign in the manuel.
I can create this sign, and give it, for instance, the code US1Aa1000XT. 66-67), and in its text appears the unknown sign. “Ff” is reserved for signs used specifically when transcribing hieratic.Įxample : the Harp Louvre E 116 A has recently been published by C. The Category should be correct, and if you really don't have a clue, you should use the Aa category. Note also that the number should not contain leading zeros. It would also be better if this number does not correspond to a “standard” sign (to avoid confusing innocent users of other softwares), So you can for instance start your numbering at 1000.

You are free to choose the number you like, but I would suggest you try to find a logical layout. (The hieroglyphs in this blog post are made possible thanks to JSesh, an open source hieroglyphic editor. When the sign you create corresponds to a completely new sign, give it a code of the form: USuid+Gardiner Category + NUMBER +“XT”+OPTIONAL VARIANT CODE. Isn’t this the coolest homework you’ve ever done? Write your name in hieroglyphs, take a picture of it, and send it off to I’ll take a look at it and try to decipher your name in hieroglyphs. With today’s fun lesson, I’m giving you some homework. And don’t forget to add the determinative that indicates the name is that of a woman!Ĭaroline’s name would be written like this: There isn’t an “E” sound in Caroline’s name, so it doesn’t get written (although some people will use the reed leaf hieroglyph for E). Finally, the sound N of the water squiggle hieroglyph. With the vowel I, there is a corresponding hieroglyph-the reed leaf (you’ve seen this before at the end of my name). which we find in hieroglyphs 2,000 years after I died when the Egyptians were trying to spell foreign Greek names like Ptolemy and Cleopatra. Then we have R, which corresponds to the mouth glyph. There is a sound found in Arabic (but not in English) that somewhat equates to the sound of the letter A (constricted at the back of the throat), and the corresponding hieroglyph is an outstretched arm. Next comes the vowel A, which the Egyptians didn’t write. So we’ll use the cup hieroglyph that has the sound K. the first sound in Caroline is a “hard C” that sounds like the letter K. Looking at the chart, you will notice that there isn’t a letter C. Using the hieroglyphic alphabet chart below, let’s write the name of my favorite Egyptologist, Caroline. In that case you will need to use the closest sound in Egyptian-the sound of the letter F. There is no hieroglyph for the sound made by the letter V. One example can be found in the names Veronica and Victor. Remember, the Egyptians didn’t normally write vowels-but certain hieroglyphs can stand for vowels.Īlso, there are common sounds in the English language that simply do not exist in ancient Egyptian. This means that we are matching hieroglyphs with the sounds in your name (not the letters). You have to keep in mind that we are using the hieroglyphs to write your name phonetically. Next invocations of JSesh will use this folder. You should create an empty folder for this specific purporse.
